As the calendar flips from January to February, now is the time to jumpstart your delicious dieting adventure. This isn’t your typical weight-loss spiel, this is a tasty journey to better self-care and a higher-quality lifestyle.

Fueling your body with more nutritious alternatives is a great place to start. Here are a few ideas for meals and snacks to keep you on the right track:

  • Breakfast: Smoothie bowls topped with seasonal fruits, shredded coconut, and chia seeds.
  • Lunch: Roasted cauliflower and hummus wrap with homemade pickles.
  • Snacks: Almond butter and banana on sourdough toast; carrot sticks and apple slices with pecan butter.
  • Dinner: Baked salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts, smashed potatoes, and a side of olive oil-roasted beets.

3. What I Learned and How it Changed the Way I Eat

My journey towards healthy eating began when I first learned the importance of limiting my intake of fats, starches and sugars. I quickly realized how much of the food I was eating was filled with these unhealthy ingredients and began to actively seek out healthier alternatives. I started by exploring fresh fruits and vegetables, which I previously shied away from, and trying out some vegetarian-friendly recipes.

The more I explored and cooked, the more I discovered the hidden rewards of healthy eating. Eating a meal high in vegetables was always more filling and satisfying than a meal laden with carbohydrates and fats. I also began to look for alternatives to store bought processed foods that were high in sodium, and found that making my own food with natural ingredients provided a much better taste with no added chemicals.

My new knowledge of the benefits of healthy eating has changed the way I prioritize my meals. I try to shop at fresh farmers markets, buy organic produce and lean proteins, and make meals that my family can enjoy. I also try to think of healthier snacks like nuts, seeds, and yogurt. I’m happy to report that we are all now eating healthier than ever before! Healthy eating is more than just a temporary lifestyle, it’s a lifestyle choice that should be embraced for life.

Gone are the days of sacrificing our taste buds for healthy eating – rejoice! We can now party with deliciousness and keep the calories in check. There are many guilt-free alternatives to our favourite dishes, lightening up the prep time, the ingredients list and our waist-line while keeping the flavour intensity as high as ever. Here are a few of our top picks:

  • Warm Avocado Salad – Skip the heavy mayonnaise and substitute with freshly mashed avocado and minced garlic. Add to your favourite assortment of fresh and crunchy vegetables. Dress with a bit of oil, salt, and pepper.
  • Spicy Soba Noodles – Cook noodles as per instructions. Gently heat some garlic and sesame oil with a few tablespoons of Sriracha sauce. Add your vegetables of choice and plop in the noodles. Finish with freshly chopped cilantro and a few toasted sesame for a great flavour burst.

5. What’s Next on My Delicious dieting Journey?

Planning the Next Steps

Though I’ve had a few wins with reducing my daily calorie intake, eating healthier and making better food choices, I’m still keen to make some significant changes. It’s not an overnight process and I know it’s going to take some dedication and hard work. Here’s some of the ideas I’m aiming to try out over the coming weeks:

  • Plan out daily meals – I’m going to take some time to plan out each of my meals and snacks for the day. Writing out the shopping list and planning what I’ll be having for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
  • Cut down on processed food – I want to exclude processed foods from my diet as much as possible. I’m going to get creative and experiment with some new recipes & cooking methods.
  • Drink more water – This is a biggie. I need to ensure I’m drinking between 2-3L of water every day. I’ll set alarms on my phone to remind me to get through the day.

These are just some of the goals I’ve set for myself. I realize that I need to have realistic expectations and take small, manageable steps towards my goal. Progress is progress, no matter how small.

A: I was inspired by the possibilities of eating healthier and better understanding the impacts my food choices had on my overall health. I wanted to find out how to be more mindful of what I was eating and how evolving my diet could positively affect my mood, energy levels, and wellbeing.

Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced throughout your journey?
A: One of the biggest challenges was figuring out what worked for me. With so many diets out there—vegetarian, keto, vegan, etc.—it was overwhelming to determine which one was right for me. Additionally, I faced some social pressure from friends and family who didn’t understand why I was changing my diet so drastically.

Q: How did you overcome the challenges and stick to your diet plan?
A: I started by speaking to a dietitian and learning more about nutrition and the science behind food. I read books and researched how different diets impacted different bodies. I also had to remind myself that I was in control and that how I chose to fuel my body was my own decision. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I reminded myself that I had taken the initiative to make a positive change and that this in itself was a success.

Q: What would you say to someone else considering taking on a diet journey?
A: Keep an open mind and have patience with yourself. It’s important to take your time and listen to your body, as it will tell you what it needs. Experiment with different diets and find out what works best for you. Don’t forget to check in with yourself and enjoy the process of learning about nutrition and how to best take care of your body.
